Overview

Tenwek Hospital serves as the primary hospital for the area’s 1 million people and is also a referral hospital that receives patients from many other parts of the country. The influx of motorcycle taxis and the improvement of major roadways has led to an ever-increasing burden of trauma in Kenya. The orthopaedic service at Tenwek performs more than 1,000 cases annually and is in great need of additional help to serve the people of the Western Highlands region of Kenya. Additionally, the Orthopaedic Department is entering its fourth year of training national residents, so the impact of serving as an orthopaedic missionary at Tenwek goes far beyond restoring broken bones; it aims to address the ongoing deficit of highly-trained, Christian surgeons who will multiply our efforts throughout Sub-Saharan Africa.

Ministry Description

Tenwek Hospital is a ministry of World Gospel Mission and Africa Gospel Church. The hospital, which started as a single-nurse dispensary in 1937, is now a 300-bed hospital and training center. In addition to being the area’s primary hospital, Tenwek serves as a referral hospital that receives patients from throughout the country. Tenwek is also a growing teaching hospital. Training programs include family practice, surgical residency, medical and clinical internships and student rotations, hospital chaplaincy, and nursing.
